The Block 2022: Transformation of the backstage of the construction site into a TV set

The block swapped city for country for the 2022 season, and in the process grew from apartment buildings and nearby houses to a huge lot.

The tree change means the contestants each renovate homes on 10 acres of land. When you add the 10 acres of Scott Cam’s own farm renovation project, that’s 60 acres in total.

Even before the arrival of the teams, the site must be ready for filming.

This year, the team only had eight weeks to prepare the construction site for the show, but with a site 40-50% larger than usual, it was a daunting task.

To run the site and film the show, many behind-the-scenes crews are needed to capture the magic so it can be brought to your screens four nights a week.

These teams include the producers, the art department and the sound engineers.

There is even a producer in charge of waking up the candidates in the morning.

“My job is to arrive on set in the dark and wake someone up from an incredibly tired sleep,” said field producer Morgan O’Neill.

“Sometimes it’s easy – they’ll wake up on their own happy like Larry, happy to be here and some contestants aren’t, and you have to navigate those relationships as the show goes on.”

The Gisborne To block the site is very different from the suburban streets of yesteryear. A car park was to be built as well as solar farms and sewage treatment plants.

Once all the infrastructure was installed on site, the team needed to find ways to communicate with each other.

And with homes and contestants farther apart than ever, they had to be able to stay on top of the chaos and drama of the renovation, to make sure they captured it all on camera.
