Nadal battled illness in New York but says he has fully recovered and is ready for the challenge of week two
Nadal is the latest Briton to appear at the US Open following the third-round exits of Andy Murray, Dan Evans and Jack Draper, and he will now prepare for another potential marathon match when he takes on Tiafoe on Monday. Join our game-by-game blog from 4 p.m. for live updates.
Nadal continues to live up to his top-10 ranking at Flushing Meadows after reaching the fourth round for the first time with victories over Benoit Paire, Joao Sousa and youngster Dane Holger Rune – the third consecutive major tournament that he has reached this stage – and is now the only one to fly the flag.
This follows an impressive run to the Wimbledon semi-finals where the British No.1 fell short to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
Nadal should expect an ‘extremely physical’ battle with Tiafoe with a US Open quarter-final place on the line – but with illness behind him, Britain’s Davis Cup captain Leon Smith is confident of the chances of the 27-year-old to win.
Nadal had suffered from a cold earlier in the week, not that it seemed to affect his tennis too much, winning each of his first three matches in straight sets.
The UK No.1 will lead the British team in the Davis Cup group stages in Glasgow the week after the US Open, but captain Smith will hope he can return home with a deep run in the final Grand Slam of the year under his belt.
“It’s going to be an extremely physical match, they’ve met many times before, it’s good that Cam won against him,” Smith said.
The US Open will see the end of the fourth round and four men’s matches will determine the last four quarter-finals. As always, we here at LWOT will be sharing our thoughts on the matches. The predictions for these matches are Shane Black, Steen Kirby and Jakub Bobro. Who do you think will win?
Britain’s Nadal says he will have to be “proactive” and “aggressive” when he takes on Tiafoe for a place in the US Open quarter-finals.
The pair face off against BST on Monday at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Seventh-seeded Nadal has already gone further than ever at Flushing Meadows.
If he gets past ninth-seeded Tiafoe, Nadal will face either Rafael Nadal or Frances Tiafoe on Wednesday.
Four-time winner Nadal will face USA 22nd seed Tiafoe in the Round of 16 at Arthur Ashe Stadium around 7:00 p.m.
